18-year-old sues parents for posting baby-photos of her on Facebook

A teenager (18-year-old),who lives in the AAustrian state of Carinthia is suing the parents for invasin of privacy. She claims that since 2009 her parents have made her life a misery by constantly posting new pictures of her on their social media accounts from when she was an infant.

The parents have been posting baby pictures of her- ranging from having her nappy changed and sitting on a potty.

She had insisted severally in the past that her parents delete the photos but they didnt and that made her proceed with the suing

She said: "I'm tired of not being taken seriously by my parents. They knew no shame and no limit - and did not care whether it was a picture of me sitting on the toilet or lying naked in my cot- every stage was photographed and then made public."

Her father on the other hand believes that he has every right to post the photos since he was the one who snapped them

The lady's lawyer, Michael Rami, says that that if it can be proven that the images have violated her rights to a personal life, her parents will lose the case.

Rami also stated that to- date her parents have posted 500 images of her on social media sites without her consent. He believes her chances of winning the court battle are high

This court case is the first of its kind in Austria

The woman’s lawyer said that based on similar cases abroad the girl’s parents may have to pay some financial compensation for her pain and suffering, and will also pay for her legal costs.

Austrian privacy laws when it comes to social media are not as strict as those in some other countries.

In France, anyone convicted of publishing and distributing images of another person without their consent suffers a one year jail term, including a fine of up to 45,000 EUR (38,260 GBP).

This would also apply to parents publishing images of their children.

French authorities have warned parents against sharing photos of their
children on Facebook, saying that the images could attract sexual predators and warn that children could face social and psychological problems later if intimate and embarrassing photos are shared with a wider public.
